Episode I FAQs

As the name Episode I suggests, this is a Prequel trilogy. This means it takes place BEFORE the original Star Wars Trilogy. Some of the characters most of us have grown up with (Han Solo, Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker) have yet to be born, while others (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, Yoda, Jabba the Hut, R2-D2, C3PO, and Emperor Palatine/Darth Sidious) appear as younger versions of themselves. (Approx. 40 years younger.) Chewbacca (as claimed by some sources to be 200 years old) has yet to appear.

Lucas shot Episode II with a Sony HDW-F900 high-definition digital camera, outfitted with custom-made lenses from Panavision. The camera was designed for both digital cinematography and HDTV production. The marketing people at Sony claim this camera capitalizes on the advantages of digital video, but keeps the aesthetic look of 35mm film.

Episode II: Attack of the Clones takes place approximately 10 years after Episode I: The Phantom Menace, and approximately 30 years before Episode IV: A New Hope (the original Star Wars movie). In ANH, Obi-Wan told Luke he fought along side his father during the Clone Wars. This movie is the begining of those wars.

About 10 years after Episode II:Attack of the Clones. Why, you ask? Luke and Leia are about 20 at the time of ANH. According to an interview with Rick McCallum (producer on the prequel trilogy), we'll see Luke being born in Episode III. That puts it 20 years before ANH, which is 10 years after AOTC.
